Kerry Patel and Kimberley Hautau
Growing Flowers and Friends
Kerry Patel
Kerry Patel is a floral designer in New Jersey. She designs florals for intimate weddings with guest counts under 50, creating personal floral experiences for the niche client that revels in intentional details. As we entered the uncertain times of the new pandemic world, Kerry realized the economic impact that was facing the floral industry. Seeing an opportunity to help ease this economic impact more locally, Kerry reached out to a local green house and began selling bouquets of their gorgeous greenhouse-grown flowers within her community - donating the proceeds from the sales to local charities that helped both struggling restaurants feed front line workers and the furloughed employees of her community YMCA. Week after week, Kerry looked forward to her socially distanced visits with the owner, and now good friend, of the local greenhouses, purchasing buckets of flowers that would inevitably bring joy and cheer to those in her community. Before she knew it, twelve weeks had gone by, countless floral arrangements were designed, and the Flowery, a retail flower shop, was born in the summer of 2020. The Flowery offers daily deliveries, weekly and monthly subscriptions, and dinnerscapes. Philanthropy is a core value of the Flowery and, to date, the Flowery has donated $5,000 back to the community.
Kimberley & Brian Hautau
Kimberley and Brian Hautau are 3rd Generation owners of Hautau & Sons, LLC.
Hautau & Sons was founded in 1902 by Brian’s grandfather, Harry Hautau. Hautau & Sons is a small, family greenhouse operation that grows specialty cut flowers. The Hautau family has been supplying the New York Flower Market with specialty cut blooms for three generations. It is one of a handful of New Jersey flower farming operations that has continued to maintain its reputation for quality cut flowers while adapting to the ever changing global floral industry.
In addition to growing up in the family business, Brian studied Ornamental Horticulture in college. His education has helped steer the business toward unique hardy ornamentals and perennials that are grown to supplement flowers grown in the greenhouse operation.
Kimberley’s love of art and eye for color, along with business and accounting studies during college provide a unique perspective when choosing flowers to add to the ever-expanding list of truly specialty cut flowers offered by Hautau & Sons.
Since assuming full responsibility for the greenhouse operation in 2010, Kimberley and Brian have introduced new and exciting specialty cuts to their product line including Hellebore, Poppies, Bleeding Heart, Sweet Pea, Pansies and Petunia. They continue to grow the signature heirloom Calla Lily that has been grown by the Hautau Family since the 1920’s.
