Wellspring Flower Farm

Wellspring Flower Farm began its journey 4 years ago with an idea to grow something different on the farm. Historically a horse farm we wanted to use the land and resources for more. The flower growing space started with a small 40x80 area of flowers to test out what varieties worked best in Georgia.  Wellspring Farm now has expanded to 3 acres of production and we plan on adding 2 more acres of production this year. Mainly growing for florist,  we also sell at a market once a month. Our retail space at the farm, “The Blooming Barn” is open Fridays and Saturdays during the  season and we recently hosted our first workshop.

Show Notes

  1. When buying equipment, don’t be afraid or drag your feet.  The time and additional income it will help create is unmeasurable.  Plus it will help save your own body.

  2. I’d like to encourage you to charge something for delivery, but if you feel you can’t please make sure you charge a minimum order size for a delivery.  They charge $250.

  3. They use rooted farmers.  Not only does it help with their event customers, but it also helped them be discovered by new customers in the area.

  4. One of the ways they determined what flowers they grew is by asking their florist customers.  They discovered flowers they hadn’t thought of growing.

  5. Because of their own preference in colors, they designed different market bouquets with different flower combinations.  They also gravitated to a softer color pallet, which seemed to work for them and their customers.  Maybe because of the younger demographic they’re seeing in their customer base.

  6. They included a jar with their more expensive bouquets.  The men seemed to prefer this option since it could be grab and go.

  7. When looking for florists to sell to, look for florists that have a consistent daily business.  They’ll need flowers year round more so than an event florist.

  8. They’ve found succession planting to the point of overgrowing to be helpful especially to help with the extra unforeseen demand.

  9. Don’t forget the foliage and fillers when designing market bouquets.  It will help bulk up your bouquet and provide greater visibility to the stars of the bouquet.
